Wiblingen Monestary

The former Benedictine monastery is situated in Ulm's district Wiblingen, approx. 5 km from the centre. The ceiling of the late Baroque Church (basilica) was painted by Januarius Zick (1780). The Rococo library was made by Christian Wiedemann, its ceiling paintings by Franz Martin Kuen (1744) and its sculptures by Dominikus Herberger.

In 1093, Count Hartmann and Otto von Kirchberg founded the monastery in honour of St. Martin. The new monastery soon experienced dynamic development and had its first heyday in the 12th century. This first development ended with a great fire in 1271.
Only in the 15th century, the monastery regained its former appeal when the notable abbot Ulrich Hablützel adapted the new rules based on the Melk reforms. In this time, the monastery's scriptorium developed and became the foundation for the famous libary of today.

The renovation work on the exterior in the 16th and 17th centuries added extensions and new building work without altering the fundamental form of the monastery. Wiblingen library is especially impressive with its original, splendid decorative furnishings and fittings, the erudite paintings by M. Kuen and sculptures by D. Herberger.
The church, consecrated in 1781, has been embellished in an entirely different style. Its interior has been designed "in antique taste" by Januarius Zick.

Today the former monastery complex is used jointly by an old people's home and various institutes from the University of Ulm.
